A budget laptop can do everything a student needs: write, research, join a video call, and run a spreadsheet. The trick is knowing which compromises are harmless.
The biggest mistake at this price is buying the cheapest configuration. A model with 4 GB of RAM and a slow hard drive will feel broken next to the same laptop with 8 GB and a solid-state drive.
| Pick | Best for | Why it stands out |
|---|---|---|
| Acer Aspire 3 | Best overall budget pick | The default budget laptop for schoolwork. Choose the 8 GB / 256 GB version. |
| Lenovo IdeaPad 1 | Best for light use | A very cheap laptop for web homework and streaming. Best as a secondary device. |
| ASUS Vivobook Go 15 | Best big screen on a budget | A 15-inch budget laptop with a comfortable keyboard. Heavier, but easier for research and writing. |
| Refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad T-series | Best value refurbished | An off-lease business laptop can cost less than a new budget model with a better keyboard and build. Check battery health and warranty. |
| HP 14 | Best simple Windows option | A basic 14-inch laptop that covers schoolwork without extras. Look for 8 GB and a 1080p screen. |

A solid-state drive is the biggest upgrade for perceived speed. A budget laptop with an SSD feels faster than an expensive one with a spinning drive.
The price gap is small; the difference in daily usability is large.
A standard 1080p panel is fine. Do not pay extra for a high refresh rate or OLED display that eats battery.
Some budget laptops can be upgraded later; others have soldered RAM and storage.
